BEAUTIFUL LOSERS

blposterproof

Beautiful Losers celebrates the spirit of the DIY art movement in the early 90′s. One of the artists featured in the documentary is ex-Calgarian Geoff Mcfetridge. He was recently interviewed by Swerve magazine where he said, “what’s interesting about Calgary and what I liked about growing up in Calgary is that it is kind of a struggle. You have to make everything from scratch. It taught me to be self sufficient.”

All of the artists were in a group show entitled “The Independents” at the Alleged Gallery on Ludlow Street in the Lower East Side. Which happens to be the street I spend a lot of time chillin with friends when I go to visit. Last month I swear you could have caught me at Max Fish every night (smile face). Back when I was living in New York we practically lived on Ludlow frequenting my favorite bar Cake Shop. This movie captures the positive vibe of the lower east side art scene that still exists today.

The film starts at 7 PM on Thursday November 27th at The Plaza Theater in Kensington. It is presented by our friends at the Calgary Underground Film Festival

E*ROCK INTERVIEW ON XLR8R TV

Eric was interviewed for XLR8R magazine. He also did the front cover of this month’s issue on the Portland music scene. I’d love to spend some time in PDX one day. Such nice art coming out of that city!

CERN – LHC FIRST BEAM LIVE WEBCAST

I am very surprised the mainstream media has not picked up on Cern. They would rather report doom and gloom. The people at Cern are doing exactly the opposite of what the Manhattan Project (collective who created the a bomb) was striving towards. We are living in extraordinary and wonderful times. Here is a recent release from Cern reiterating the safety of the LHC.

You can watch the Live webcast starting at 8:30 on Wednesday, September 10. 09/10/08

If you want to check out what time it will be happening on your location around the world you can calculate it here. This is exciting. For example it is happening at 1 AM Calgary time tonight.

Peace on earth. *miss meln

ps. I’m gonna bike to my local independent record shop and pick up Chad VanGaalen‘s new album, Soft Airplane. He’s a local artist and animator.  Here is one of his most recent animations…

ADDICTIVE TV REMIX FOR OLYMPICS

An old friend of mine whom I met along the path is part of the VJing duo ADDICTIVE TV. Graham just sent me a email updating me on what he has been up to. He just remixed this video for the Olympics that was part of a traveling exhibition commissioned by Adidas. To watch their video please click on this link. It is so good! I believe him and his partner are also taking part in the Opening Ceremony’s this Friday evening from Beijing.

Go Graham Go!

I met Graham while I was living in London back in the 05 at Optronica. Optronica is a VJ / AV festival put on by Graham. During the festival Addictive TV project images across the Thames onto the wall of the National Theatre. It is a wonderful sight and should not be missed. If you are in the London area I strongly suggest going to see this free event held on Friday August 22 2008.  Here’s a video from last years party…

MELNCOLY SHOT THE FLAMING LIPS :0)

When the Virgin Music Festival was announced a few months ago naturally I was only stoked to see that The Flaming Lips were coming to Calgary. The festival was held in the beautiful historic Fort Calgary. The show has honestly changed my life. It was almost like the dream I dream every night. So familiar. The introduction was magical… this is how it went down in my mind. They intro the music. The beautiful and electric Wayne Coyne comes out on stage in a giant bubble and walks onto the crowd as they are lifting him from their feeble arms. Suddenly 15 medium sized balloons are released into the air like beach balls flying but going so much slower of a pace. Giant cannons shoot out yellow and orange confetti creating a sea of magical energy. Than all of a sudden when you think you’ve seen it all a group of 37 Teletubies come dancing onto the stage. That has got to be the best introduction I have ever seen of a band.

Just the perfect way to celebrate the Summer Solstice! Thank you Lips *MELNCOLY LOVES YOU!

Luckily for you I captured my favorite song of theirs with my camera. Here is the song YOSHIMI Battles The Pink Robots… enjoy.
